Hyundai introduced the IONIQ for the first time at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, and yesterday revealed additional details for improvements to the car for 2020.

First of all, Hyundai Ioniq was the first car to be available in three versions: Hybrid, Plugin Hybrid and fully electric. So we have three cars to talk about.

Hyundai Ioniq 2020 in short

  • The name IONIQ is taken from Ion and Unique.
  • IONIQ Electric with a 38.3 kW wide battery, a 294 km operational range and a more capable charger to speed up the car's charging.
  • IONIQ hybrid 1.6-liter engine produces 104 horsepower and 43 hp electric motor.
  • IONIQ hybrid 1.6-liter engine produces 104 horsepower and 60 horsepower engine.
  • Available with Hyundai package for SmartSense safety systems.
  • Competitions: Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric

We will start with the Hyundai Ioniq Electric Improvements, where the car will receive a 38.3 kWh instead of the old 28 kW battery. This will allow for a longer operational range of 294 km per charge according to the WLTP.

It will also have a new 7.2-kW (instead of 6.6 kW) charging port to enable you to charge your ion faster. The Korean company says the battery can be shipped to 80 percent through a 100 kW express charging station in about 54 minutes. As for the electric motor, it remained the same with 134 horsepower and 295 Nm.

Hyundai Ionic Hybrid

There is no change to the Kappa gasoline engine, a four-cylinder 1.6-liter engine that produces 104 horsepower and 147 nm of torque. The electric motor is 43 horsepower and 170 Nm. The battery has a capacity of 8.9 kWh.

This version shares the traditional engine with the Ionic, but it uses an electric motor that offers a higher capacity: 60 horsepower and also a 170 nm torque. The battery here is also larger, with a capacity of 15.6 kWh, thus providing an operational range of electricity only for a distance of 52 km.

Improvements to format and technique as well
From the outside, the car looks a bit more mature with new LED front and rear headlights, a front bumper and a ventilation vent with a different design. Inside, the air conditioning system has been redesigned and some vaccinations are added in black glaze.

The entertainment system is BlueLink, which means that it can be connected to cellular phones and use a special application to warm and cool the car through the phone even when you are inside your home, and you can open and close the car as well. The average screen size is 10.25 inches.

The three versions will benefit from the Hyundai SmartSense safety package, which includes an anterior collision avoidance assistant, a warning system to alert the driver if distracted, a collision warning within the blind spot area, and an assistant to keep track.

To exit these systems, there are several devices installed around the car, including

LiDAR Light Detection And Ranging.
A group of three cameras reveals the proximity of pedestrians, the specific lines of the tracks on the road, as well as the traffic lights.
Antenna GPS connection to determine the exact location of each vehicle.
High-resolution map data from Hyundai's MnSoft, which provides high-resolution positioning, road gradient and trailing, trajectory display, and indicator data.
Blind spot detection radar ensures that the rails are safely changed.
