Mobile Malaria Project embarks on a journey of discovery

Land Rover has engineered vehicles that have been able to cope with the toughest terrain around the world for more than 70 years and is now working with Mobile Malaria, the 2018 Land Rover winner in partnership with the Royal Geographic Society (GRI) Sub-Saharan Africa to carry out a unique eight-week exploration trip.

The Mobile Malaria project, made up of three researchers from Oxford University led by Dr. George Busby, travels more than 6,300 kilometers in Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya and, traveling with a specially modified Land Rover Discovery, will explore the challenges facing the most vulnerable areas Of malaria in Africa, where 90 percent of the world's disease cases are monitored.

Designed and developed by Land Rover's Special Operations Division, the Discovery car is equipped with a gene sequence analyzer and maximizes the 1,137-liter load capacity. In addition to the refrigeration and freezing unit to maintain the safety of scientific materials, the car has a modified system of control of the load capacity with boxes designed specifically to store the equipment and additional battery attached to the car.

The exterior also features modified additions, including a specially designed double sun umbrella, rescue equipment, crane, sand and mud rails, additional roof cover and LED night driving lights.

These modifications will allow the team to experiment with mobile DNA sequencing technology, in collaboration with African research centers, to better understand how this technology can be used in different locations, providing important information on parasitic groups and malaria mosquitoes, including their resistance to drugs and pesticides.

He said d. "We are delighted that Land Rover and the British Royal Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) have chosen our project to win the 2018 grant," said George Busby, Mission Manager, Mobile Malaria.

Although global rates of malaria have declined in the last 20 years, the improvement has been slowing recently. Working with our colleagues in Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya, this trip will help us understand the challenges facing malaria researchers in Africa in 2019. "

"The Discovery car loan not only gives us the ability to visit sites that we could not access by other means but also gives us space and flexibility to transport the equipment we need. This will allow us to better understand the ability of this technology to answer local questions about malaria parasites and the mosquitoes that it carries. "

Land Rover Discovery has a 30-year history of adapting to the most rugged terrain, reaching vulnerable populations and vulnerable people around the world. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, this vehicle allows the team to travel confidently, whatever the circumstances they face.

"Malaria is a global problem affecting millions of people around the world, and we at Jaguar Land Rover have a passion for using our technology to empower talent and support experts in their fields to make a real difference in our world," said Dr. Steve Ellie, chief medical officer at Jaguar Land Rover.

Through the modified technology developed by the Special Automotive Operations Team, this project provides a deeper insight into how to combat malaria globally, and I am proud that Land Rover is part of this journey. "

The mission also collaborates with another Land Rover humanitarian partner, the "3-word title" system, to accurately plan the route, locate the ground and document the results directly.

Malaria Mobile will launch from the UK on March 22 to start its eight-week mission.
